Adrenaline

A hormone secreted by the adrenal medulla in response to stress or anger. It increases heart rate, blood pressure and cardiac output.

Aneurysm

A blood-filled arterial dilation caused by weakening of the vessel wall.

Angina (Angina pectoris)

Chest pain. Tightness, pressure and aching of the chest.

Angiography

A test that uses the injection of a dye to make arteries easily visible on x-rays.

Angioplasty

A technique used to widen a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel, usually as a result of atherosclerosis.

Anxiety

Unpleasant feeling of uneasiness, fear or worry.

Arrhythmia

Disturbance in the rhythm of the heart beat.

Atherosclerosis

Process in which fatty substances form a plaque (collection) on inner arterial walls.

Atherosclerotic plaque (Atheroma)

Collection of cholesterol and fatty deposits on inner arterial wall.

Cardiac Arrest

Stopping of the heart beat.
